This
visa class is available for aliens to engage in academic training
in the U.S. The classification includes a number of different
occupational categories. Two of the categories are for college
and university students, and secondary school students. Some
J aliens are subject to a two-year foreign residency requirement.
A post-secondary public or private school must be accredited
to enroll J-1 students. A J-1 student may pursue a non-degree
program with a specific educational objective for up to 24
months. Such objectives may include intensive English Language
training, classroom instruction, research projects, and academic
training.
